New Zealand's Annual Drink Bill
Mr O. M. Gray, in his annual " Colonial Drink Bill, " just contributed Jo the : New Zealand Methodist, makes the announcement that the amount spent in mii toxicating liquors during 1887 (£2,060,---543) is the smallest sum that has been expended in one year in this Colony for over nineteen years. In 1869 the total was £2,541,507, or about £10 10s per head of the whole population. Lust year the average only reached £3 ss, being a decrease of £7 5s per head. Another very pleasing feature in connection with our New Zealand drink expenditure may be found in, the fact that our average is considerably lower than those of Victoria and New South Wales, and is also smaller than that of the United Kingdom. The latest figures show the average per head to be : -Victoria. £4 19s lid ; New South Wales, £4 19s 6d ; United Kingdom, £3 7s 8d ; New Zealand, £3 5«. Whilst the amount of the •• Drink Bill" j is annually becoming smaller, the qtian* tity of tea consumed in the colony is rapidly growing larger. During 1886 the quantity cleared from bond for colonial consumption was 1,140,4801 b. Last year, duty was paid on 4,713,84i-lb, being an increase of 573.3601 b.
