The Sydney Markets

The N.Z. L. and M. A. Company Limited, under date Sydney, May 3rd 1888, report as follows : — Butter (duty Id per lb).— Owing to •continue absence of rain, prices have improved still further since last writing, and prime Al quantity coast butter is to-day quoted at up to Is 3d per lb. Some inquiries are now being made for a good new second quality butter, which we think would be Teidily saleable at from . 6d to 8d | should the dry weather continue. Cheese (duty 2d per lb) has also improved since last writing, and may to»day be quoted at up to od for prime quality. Loaf cheese is marketable at from s£d to 6d. Hams (duty 2d per lb) may still be ■quoted at Is Id for light weights, with the market very lightly stocked. Bacon (duty 2d per lb). — Prime tight cuts, of which the market is Tery bare at present, can be placed readily at up to 9£d. Maize (free). — The maize market *ince last writing has experienced ■considerable fluctuation, prices at one 4ime ruling. as high as 2s 7£d, owing to shipments not coming forward when ■expected, but during the last week i;he market has receded to 2s 4d. Today's quotation is slightly in advance •of this figure, however. "Wheat (free).— Business continues •dull at from 3s 6d to 3s 7d and we Are unable to report the sale of anything like lines. Barley (free).— Cape Barley remains •dull at 38.

Oats (free). — Since writing on the 16th ultimo prices advanced somewhat ■even on our quotations given then, but with the arrival of the " Loongana" on the 26th, with 3800 sacks j ihe "Tekapo," on the 27th ultimo, with 3600 sacks ; and the " Waka4ipu," on the 28th, with 6800 sacks, prices have eased somewhat, as it is reported that the " Pukaki," now on the way to this port, brings a further large supply. We therefore have to xeporfethe market as weaker at the test milling up to 2s 3£dgood bright *tout heavy feed up to 2s 2d good deed up to 2s Id inferior and dark up to Is lOd prime seed 2s 3d. Potatoes (free). — The arrivals by the " Tekapo" consisted of some 8900 sacks, but as the average quality was really excellent, the market was not -weakened by the reception of this large parcel so much as might have "been feared. We quote to-day:— !N.Z Blue Derwents 60s per ton Circular Heads 60s Warrnambools 50s,

■Malt (free). — We have nothing iresh to report under this heading. New Zealand Hemp (free).— £2o may still be quoted as a full figure for best well-dressed samples, the market having a somewhat downward ten-

deney. Fungus (free) i« still saleable at up to 4£d for best well-dried fungus in light-weight bales. Flour (free).— During the past fortnight the market has continued quiet and but little new business can be reported. We quote :— Best roller brands up to £9 10s second brands up to £9 stone brands from £8 to £8 Ids.

Hides (free). — There is no improvement to note in thia market, indeed so little disposition has been shown by consumers to purchase anything beyond their immediate requirements that further slight concessions in value have been forced upon sellers. We quote : — Prime extra heavy, 3 Jd; light, 3fto 3fd ; dry, 3d to 4d. Tallow (free).- -Since the date of our last issue no material alteration has taken place in this market. There is a strong shipping demand, and although occasional signs of weakness have been noticeable in prices paid at auction, values have, on the whole, "been fairly well maintained. We quote -.-Prime beef, £18 10s to £19 ; medium, £17 to £18 ; inferior, £15 10s to £16 10s. New Zealand Meats (free).— Salt beef continues extremely dull of sale, and it is difficult to place consignments at the moment even at considerably xeduced figures. . Wool (free). — The latest advices from our Head Office in London concerning the second series of sales now in course o£ progress is to the following effect:- "The tone of the martet is very firm, but prices show no change of importance." In the local market good private enquiry has been experienced especially for fair sized shipping parcels in the crease. This description is, however, very scarce, and but little business has resulted. We quote:— Greasy medium, 7d to 1 xa'. inferior, 5d to 6£d ; scoured super., Hdto 16d; medium, 12d to 13jd; inferior, 6£d to lid.
