A Promising Sculler

-♦ A sculler who is spoken of as likely to become an aspirant to the title of of champion of the world has made his appearance at Newca&tle-on-Tyne. Garr is a man of extraordinary size for an oarsman. Though but 24 years of age, he stands 6ft 3£in in his stockings, and weighs, when in training, nearly 15st. This youthful giant made a great impression in his first match rowed against Thomas Sadler, of Bedwell. The race was contested in open boats over a two*mile course, for £25 aside, on July 23 last, Oarr winning with great ease. He was then matched against William Given for the same amount, over the same distance at Blyth, and won easily, and was afterwards pitted against William Giles East, of Putney, who has made a good name by his victories on the Thames. The race took place on the 31st of December last on the Tyne for a stake of £100 aside, and is said to have created. a scene that has not been witnessed since Hanlan defeated Boyd. The struggle was desperately close and exciting up to Bedheughbridge Tone mile), but after this Carr drew away and won by fifteen lengths, covering the course of 3 miles 760 yards in 25min 57sec. Innes is reported to have said that Carr was an exceptionally good man, and congratulated the Tynesiders on their improved prospects of regaining the championship of the world.
