The Grain Market

Tbe N.Z.L. and M.A. Company report under date, Sydney, January 20th, 1888 :— Butter (duty Id per lb)— The standard quotation for our best local pack is 4d to 6d per lb with a fairly brisk market, Inferior descriptions meet with no inquiry. Cheese (duty 2d per lb)— 4£d to 5d is a full quotation to-day for ordinary colonial descriptions. Bains (duty 2d per lb)— Good light N.Z. hams from ten to fifteen pounds weight meet with: fair sale at Is. Heavy sorts from seventeen to twenty fire pounds rule a penny less. Bacon (duty 2d per lb.— Since writing on the 23rd ultimo the market has remained unaltered, BJ4 to 9d being still the ruling quotations for prime quality, small sides. Wheat (free). — The nominal quotation for milling wheat is from 3s 6d to 3s Bd. Chick wheat' at the moment is exceedingly scarce, prices ruling as high as 3s 3d per bushel, though we do not expect this figure to hold good for more than a day or two. Oats (free). — We regret that we are unable to write more cheerfully under this heading, but as yet the market shows no signs of strengthening, and our quotations furnished in our circular of December 23 still hold good viz : — Best milling 2s 3d good bright heavy feed, up to 2s 2d good feed Is lid to 2s Id inferior and dark up to Is lOd prime seed 2s 3d. Fungus (free). — Well dried parcels still command from 4£d to 4fd per lb. . Hides (free).— Market firmer, good conditioned extra heavies being in request at from 3£d to 4£d, while light kip hides may be quoted a shade dearer. Badly flayed and sloppy hides are difficult of sale and show no imi provement in value. Tallow (free). — The better news from Europe has had the effect of hardening values materially in spite of existing high rates of freight. We quote — best beef, Ll7 10s to Llßs 58; medium quality to Ll7. No mutton offering. Good shipping lines are in resquest. - Wool (free).— -The market continues to Bhow great animation, the contingent from the southern having infused a considerable amount of spirit into the saleroom. As usual at this Beason of the year, the better descriptions of wool are somewhat scarce and when any parcel of superior quality is submitted it calls forth exceedingly keen competition from all quarters, English, Continei t ', and local buyers all contributing their biddings very freely — so much so, indeed, that we can chronicle a distinct advance of from £d to £d per lb in washed and scoured descriptions; while medium greasies, which a short time since languished somewhat, now show great firmness. Sheepskins (free).— ln brisk demand at up to s£d for well-wooled dry skins. Pelts are readily taken up at2d. . . , •
