Wellington Markets

Wellington, January 14. George Thomas and Co. report produce prices as follows : — For the past fortnight there has been no stir in the market and business is unusually flat, but perhaps not more than might be expected at the present time, when the ordinary course of trade has been broken by a succession of holidays. From all quarters we hear anticipations of bountiful harvests and a consequent heavy yield of all descriptions of produce for the season now almost upon us. Purchasers of the old grain, in oats especially, are very chary of investing largely, and sales are oon* fined to retail parcels ; in fact, the same cautiousness in a modified degree is apparent in transactions for other cereals^ We quote bright short oats 2s ld to 2s 2d ; long do. Is lOd to ls lld per bushel; oatmeal, £9 5s to £9 10s; flour, stone process, £9 5s to £9 10s; roller do., £9 10s to £10; wheatmeal, £10 per ton ; fowls' wheat, 3s 6d per bushel ; bran, few enquiries, £3 to £3 5s ; pollard, £3 5s to £3 10s; maize is almost out of the market until arrival of the new grain, present value, 3s lOd.to 4s ld; feed barley also awaits new seasons supplies, nominally we quote 2s lOd to 2s lld per bushel; bluo peas, 3s 6d to 3s 9d ; beans, 3s 9d to 3s lOd. Onions have arrived rather largely, and caused an over supply, the demand not being sufficient to carry off surplus stocks, quotations rule fron? £6 10s to £7 per ton. Fluke potatoes £4 10s to £5 ; round do., £3 10s to £4 per ton; old potatoes may still be obtained at £2.
