Useful to Sawmillers

Those persons who have a quantity of blue gum trees growing on their property are in a fair, way of having an addition made to their income from the sale of the leaves. From the San Francisco Chronicle, we (Auckland News) heard that the maay growers of the eucalyptus trees on the outskirts of Oakland have been able to utilise their product in a peculiar but at the same time profitable way of late. There has been a great demand for the leaves of the quickly growing " gums" occasioned by the increased manufacture of the eucalyptus boiler scale in .which a local firm is extensively engaged at present; The use of the " scale" is in preventing corrosion in steam boilers. It prevents the formation of carbonate of lime, or carbonated of magnesia scale, and gradually removes the old formation of scale from the interior of boilers. The eucalyptus preventative has been adopted, and is now in use on most of the American steamship lines, the United States navy, and in thousands of stationery boilers. It is an inexpensive material, and has displaced zinc as a remedy for lime and magnesia scales in nearly all parts of the world. One thing which recommends the use of the euoalyptus is that it will not cause water to prime, but will prevent priming from water concontaining alkalies. The Company engaged in the preparation of the leaves for the £ purpose named has found the industry a very profitable one. ■ ■ •
