Fire in Wellington
Early on Sunday morning a fire broke out in Mr Bullock's fancy goods shop, next to the City Buffet Hotel, Wellington. About sixty persons were boarding in the Hotel, many being from the country districts. Among others were Mr and Mrs H. Adsett and family, of Taonni, who escaped with, some difficulty, after losing the whole of their wearing apparel, and many articles they had purchased immediately on their arrival in Wellington, The buildings destroyed were the City Buffet Hotel, Bullock's fancy goods shop, and Carpenter's fruit shop. The stock from Nelson and Moats' was damaged in removal. Gardner's warehouse on the north side of the hotel had several narrow escapes, but the firemen were able to save it from taking fire. About £200 damage was done to the stock. The origin of the fire is unknown. The following are the insurances : — City Buffet Hotel.— The building was insured in the Liverpool, London, and Globe office for L 2500, and the furniture and stock in the same office for LI3OO. Mr Orr estimates his loss at LIOOO over insurances. Mr John Bullock's and Mr W. Carpenter's shops (being in one building) are insured in the Colonial office for LIOOO, reinsured in the Equitable LSOO, and the London and Lancashire L 250. Mr Bullock's stock is insured in the Liverpool, London, and Globe for LIOOO. He took stock in September last, and estimates his loss over insurances at L2OOO. Mr Carpenter's stock is insured for L2OO in the New Zealand office — LIOO each on furniture and stock. A piano worth L4O was saved. His loss will be considerable. Nelson, Moate and Co.'s building is insured in the New Zealand office for LIOOO, and the shop in the Phoauix for L3OO, and London, Liverpool Globe for L7OO. - v Davenport, Caithie and Davenport's stook is insured in the Phoenix office for LSOO.
