Palmerston Caledonian Sports By our Special Correspondent. Along with a large number of other Feildingites I yesterday paid a visit to the Caledonian Society's annual Sports at Palmerston. Soon after the arrival of the train at Terrace End, close to the sports ground, the events commenced, and continued at shorter j or longer intervals, some of which > indeed were much too long, as remarked by a great many visitors. It appeared to me as if, to use an old sajing, there were '• too many cooks." Officials at any rate were numerous, and it would puzzle the proverbial Philadelphia lawyer to tell who was really " boss," unless it was the bellman. The committee seemed to be at sea as regarded having a proper system of managing the programme, and I could not help contrasting this feature of the affair with the different style in which the Feiiding sports are conducted. Perhaps, however, some allowance should be made for the great difference in the age of the two institutions, and I will assume that the Caledonian sports, which have certainly begun well, will improve in the matter of dispatch as the promoters gain in experience. This was the only fault I could see, for otherwise the whole thing passed off first rate, i.e., what I saw of it, for the programme was not much more than half through when our return train left. Certainly the weather was all that could be desired, and the attendance very large. The Terrace presented an admirable sight, especially as in this part of the ground the fair sex predominated, and their beautiful summer dresses showed an endless and charming variety of style and hue. To add to the pleasurableness of the proceedings, the Hibernian Band from the Empire City, performed at intervals, and must be commended for the excellent music they provided. There was one booth for the sale of " the creature," and yet I saw not a single instance of inebriety, aor indeed^of disorderly proceeding of any kind whatever. Altogether, I should say the sports were a success, and their annual recurrence will doubtless be looked forward to with pleasure by many persons throughout this district.
