Intelligence has been received that at Samoa on the German Emperor's birthday, a free fight took place, at which some Germans were assaulted by Samoas, immediately after the German mail steamer Lubeek left Apia. On the 23rd August the German Consol demanded 13,000 dollars from King Malietoa for the assault and for Samoan robberies from German plantations; Malietoa replied that he could not .pay on so shor,t notice, but would call his chiefs together. Next day 500 men were landed from the German squadron with gatling guns, and war declared against Malietoa. The Germans proclaimed Tamesese Sang, hoisted His flag, and fired a royal salute, 1 and when . the schooner left the opposing forces were preparing to fight, Malitoa musters 1000 men, and four German men-of-war at Apia have landed 1300 troops and marines. The' American and acting, British Consuls issued a proclamation that their Governments do -not and have never recognised Tamesese as King of Samoa, but continue as heretofore to recognise Malietoa. There are urgent demands at Samoa for a British man-of-war, but there are none in Fiji, the Swinger haying left the previous day.
