Next day 500 men were landed from the German squadron with gatling guns, and war declared against Malietoa. The Germans proclaimed Tamesese Sang, hoisted His flag, and fired a royal salute, 1 and when . the schooner left the opposing forces were preparing to fight, Malitoa musters 1000 men, and four German men-of-war at Apia have landed 1300 troops and marines. The' American and acting, British Consuls issued a proclamation that their Governments do -not and have never recognised Tamesese as King of Samoa, but continue as heretofore to recognise Malietoa.
