The Charge Against Dr Connolly
Dr Connolly was arrested on Wednesday last on a charge of attempted rape on the wife of Mr Pope, second mate of the Storm bird. Mrs Pope had gone to Connolly's house to consult him on a complaint necessitating a digital examination of the vagina. After leaving the houseVshe went to the Stormbird and complained to her husband that she had been criminally assaulted. Mr Pope then laid an information, and had DrT Connolly arrested. The case is now being heard. The case is considered very weak, as the woman is a complete stranger to Dr Connolly. There were servants and two other patients in the house at the time of the visit. The woman made no complaint, and paid the fee before leaving. It is thought to be a case of hysterical mania. Much indignation is felt at the police making the arrest without fully v enquiringinto the matter before- subjecting Dr Connolly, if ho bears an irreproachable character, to the indignity and damage of arrest.
