The Captain Cam Case

UNITED PItKSS ASSOCIATION."!

Dunedin. Januarys!

Hall's trial was resumed this morning by the defence calling Joseph Ed wards. He said that in 1885 he wits omployed by Slater, a draper in Timaru, In June, July, or August Cain came into the shop, became sick aud vomited very muoh.

Dr Alexander, surgeon and physician, had board Dr Melntyre describe the symptoms presented by Gain during his last illness aud the evidence of tho witnesses with him before he died. So far as they desuritted the maimer of Cam's death, it was not inconsistent with natural causes, with arsenic poisoning, for instance, the symptoms were not inconsistent with one suffering from Bright's disease. He thwn described the nature and effects of there two dise-tsos. Tbe symptoms noticed immediately hefore Cain's death wore not distinctively suggestive of autimorii-tl poiso-iing. Without a complete diagnosis as to the state of the patient he should hesitate to give an opinion whether the administration of antimony had ameliorated death.

Robert Hall Bakewell, M.D., of University of St. Andrew's and New Zealand, examined by Mr Chaphara, deposed that he had practised for-be-tween 32 and 33 yenrs in former years. Witness had considerable acquaintance with the use of antimozrials iv medicine. He had formed ad opinion as to what was the cause of death. His opinion was that death was the result of urinic poison, accelerated by alcoholic poisoning.

This closed the case for the defence.
