The Manchester Rifles

The Manchester Itifles paraded last night for Government Inspection. There were about thirty-four officers and men present. After some smart sword bayonet exercise by Lieutenant Pleasants, the company was marched into a paddock belonging to the E. and C.A. Corporation where they were exercised in company and battalion drill by SergeantMajor Henry. At about nine o'clock, an alarm of fire was sounded, and Captain Macarthur marched his men to the spot at the double. The men at once set to work and lent most valuable aid in checking the progress of the flames, and saving furniture and goods. When the fire was over they fell in, and were dismissed. Owing to the lateness of the hour it was impossible to hold the meeting of the corps, at which a good deal of formal business had to be done.
