Prudence

.* . We learn from our contemporary the New Zealand Times that the Government has in view a modification of its general policy, and proposes to exercise strict economy in administration. The causes which have led up to this are — the unfavorable reception the last loan was accorded in England, and the persistent falling off in the revenue of the colony. As the capitalists at Home have given such a broad hint, the Government has prudently determined that Parliament will aot be asked to sanction any further loans until the feeling of want of confidence in New Zealand debentures is removed. Although the Ministry has been in a manner forced to adopt a policy of prudence, yet we feel certain it will be able to meet and overcome all the obstacles and difficulties before it. One great thing in favor of the Government is that the financial position of the colony is known absolutely ; no false glamour of imaginary prosperity exists to dazzle their eyes. The extra two or three millions given by the increased values of wool, grain, and other staple produce will go far to restore that commercial prosperity which tends so greatly to augment or harden the fiscal revenue. We are confident the administrative ability of the Ministry, as displayed during the period of depression through which the colony has just passed, will meet its just reward in the continued support of the people.
