Feilding Star. TUESDAY, AUGUST 24, 1886. Manchester Riffes

The Council of tho Manchester Rifles are determined to take time by the forelook. It will be remembered that at the last scare of a Russivn war, when the Government caused a roll to be prepared of mon liable to serve as militiamen, there was a sudden rush of recruits for the ranks. Many of these after being dulj sworn in, and provided with arms and accoutrements at considerable expense U the corps, in the same ratio as the probabilities of war diminished, so did their attendance at parade or drill fall off. It is net intended that a second opportunity will be given for such men to make a convenience of the corps. Every candidate who presents himself will have to be elected in accordance with the rules of the oorps. He will also have to be up to the fixed standard in height, and possess the recognised physical qualifications of a soldier. Last, but not least, he will have to make a contribution to the funds of the corps, the amount of which will prebably be fixed at the next meeting •f the Council. In view of the present attitude of Russia towards England, * war may be precipitated at any moment, when every man oapable of bearing arms in the defence of his country will be called upon to serve in the ranks. It will be wise for member* of Volunteers oorps who have shows carelessness »r indiff ertnoe in attending parades, to make an effort to fulfil the various duties they have sworn to perform, otherwise they may be struok off the rells without the slighest compunotion, in order that their places may be filled by tatter men. They will then have to serve in the ranks of the Militia, where their duties are of a more arduous amd unpleasant nature, under officers not of their own selecting, as is the case with Volunteer Corps.
