The Revenue

Tiie Customs duties during the June quarter of this year showed the large decrease of £66,000 as compared with the corresponding quarter of 1885. The falling off was chiefly in spirits, tobacco, wine, beer, tea, and sugar. But it does not follow tho consumption ef these items has iv any way diminished. During the quarter ending in June last year, when there was a scare among importers that the tariff on the above articles was about to be raised, which caused them to clear out of bond large quantities, there was a proportionate increase to the revenue But as there was no such exciting cause during the currency of the corresponding quarter this year an apparent, but not real, falling off appears.
