The Waste Lands Committee to-day reported on the claims of the old soldiers as follows :— That they do not see reason to recommend these claims to be reopened, and consider that if entertained at all they ought to be first inqnired into and reported on by the Government.

Barker's Commercial Hotel, was de» stroyed by fire early this mernmg. Henson Bollinshaw. a bootmaker, perished m the flames. The other inmates bed a narrow escape. The premises are insured for £1400, the stock afcd furniture £950.

The City Council has settled all the compensation claims /arising out ef the Dowling Street accident, except those of Irwin, wbe claims £2000. and Miss Vivian, who claims £500. These are expected te be settled without recourse to law.
