" More Judges"

An effort is being made by oertain newspapers in the colony to stir up an agitation in favor of making new appointments to the Judioial Bench, and increasing the emoluments of the present Chief Justice and the Puisne Judges. The modus operandi is simple, but whether it will be effective or not remains to be Been. One journal, supposed to enjoy Ministerial confidence, stateß positively that another Judge is to be appointed. This statement is at once flatly contradioted by another journal, supposed to be equally well informed. The result is that the public, naturally enough, come to the conclusion that there is a little wire pulling going on. Our own opinion is that the appointment of a new Judge is pretty well cut and dried, so we will not be surprised to see "provision made" on the Estimates for the additional salary. If such should be the case, we do hope the House will out this item out with ruthless hand. That the necessity exists fer another Judge we are not prepared to say, believing that if Jt did the Chief Justice ought first to make it known to the Government openly and officially, so that Parliament could be guided and assisted in their deliberations on the required vote. The revenue of the colony is not at the present time in a oondition to bear any additional burdens. A general belief is beooming fixed in the minds of the taxpayers that too much is paid already in the form of salaries and honoraria to high, {and in some oases, ornamental offioiulr
