An expressman named Mercer, residing at Newtown, hanged himself tjiis morning. He had been drinking heavily.

It is understood that Major Porter, of Gisborne, has instructed a Wellington firm of solicitors to take proceedings against the Gisberae Independent for alleged libel.

The Po»t to-night states that great dissatisfaction has been caused amongst the prize winners at the recent Industrial Exhibition by the contemptible meanness shown by the authorities in regard te the prizes won by the principal exhibitors. Dunedin, June 4.
