Tenders for advertising on telegraph poles will close en Monday. A notice re the general election of members for the Eiwitea Road Board is published to-day-We draw attention to a number of new " want" advertisements from Mr S, J. Thompson. On Easter Monday the post and telegraph office will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. only. The window will be open for postal business only from 7 to 8 p.m. Tenders are invited by the Manchester Road Board for forming the Taonui road. Tenders will be received up to Saturday next. Alternate tenders will be received by the Kiwitea Road Board up t» Saturday next, for forming and culvertmg eight pieces of Williamson's road. It is intimated by the Clerk of the Dis« trict Court, Palmerston, that the attendance of common jurors will not be required en the 28th instant. The catalogue of Messrs Stevens and Gorton's market-day sale in Feilding on Thursday the 29th instant, appears to* day. The following is a catting from the Pates Mail, but what it means is beyond ÜB: _We hear Mr E. Morse, of the Bank •f Australasia, is to be moved to Hawera next week. When yon cure her all is lest. Our readers aro reminded of the entertainment to take place in the Public Hall on Monday night. On the same evening a dance will be held in the Foresters' Hall by Mr Curreen, commencing at 8 o'clock. At Eiwitea yesterday a horse aged twenty years, the property of Mr Currin, storekeeper, which had been ailing for some time, walked deliberately into the water in an old gravel pit, and committed suicide by drowning. Tha Salvation Army will hold a picnic on the Oval on Monday morning at 11 o'clock, and in the evening, at the Barracks, Manchester street, Bible questions will be received and answered, after which a coffee supper will be held. To«day we publish as an '• inset" an address from Mr G. V. Shannon to the policy-holders in the N. Z. Life Assurance Association. We commend it te the careful perusal of our readers. As Sir George Whitmore has succeeded in inducing the Defence Minister to grant capitation allowance to cadet corps, we hope that steps will be taken in Feilding to form one without farther delay. We would suggest that a meeting be held in the school house, of parents who would like their eons to Decome members. Captain McArthur, who is in command of the Manchester Rifles, could be invited to attend, and he would supply all necessary information. A letter received from Home by lh» last mail states that Mr Viggc Monrad, a well kuown runholder in 'Palineraton North, who, with his family, left for Grent Britain some months ago, has decided not t« return to the colony, and that his eldest son, who has leased the property, ha* now arrived in Palmerston. ' The Borough Council advertises for lenders for the collection of the dog tax for the current year; that a special meetof the I'ouncil will be held on Thursday, the 29th instant, at 9 p.m. toheur object ions to tho burgess list ; and that appli* cations for the appointment ©f Auditors will be received up to 4 p.m. on 29th instant. Tho secretary of the Palmerston Dramatic i lub wires to inform us that at the entertaiansent on Monday night in the Peilding Public Hall, m addition to the advertised programme Herr Norbory will give a violin solo. Messrs Kendall, Johnston, and others will giro songs. Mr H. W. Haybittle will also give a recitation. A full orchestra under Herr Norberg will assist. Mr Samuel Austin, for many years overseer of th« Wanganui Herald, died at his residence, Wanganui, yesterday, of consumption. Deceased, who was well known on this coast, will be buried on Sunday with Masonic and Foresters' funeral obsequios. The late Mr Austin was a printer by trade, and was possessed of considerable literary ability. Ho lenvos a wife and two children, as well as a Urjre circle of friends, to mourn his early demise. The tea meeting held at the Wesleyan Chapel on Thursday evening was a marked success. About one hundred persons of both sexes sat down to the tables. Tho addresses by the- several clergymen were all very good, and excited much interest. The combined choirs ef Sandoa and Feildiug rendered several sacred pieces in excellent style. Several Feilding ladies sang solos and duets most effectively. The monetary results of the gathering were consequently very satisfactory. The disastrous grass fires which took place od the Vernon Bud in the middle of December last Ihare (says the Marlborough Expross) itiven risa to a lawsuit. The Hon. Wm. Clifford has issued a writ against Messrs Parker and Maddock, the Dash wood Pass railway contractors, claiming £1,500 damages for the injuries sustained in consequence, as he alleges, of defendants or defendants' workmen having negligently allowed tho fire fram a brick kiln to extend to the herbage on the run. The ease will come «n for trial at the May sittings of tho Supreme Court in Blenheim, and it is said that numerous witnesses will be called on both sides.
