The Hutt Outrage

In the R.M., court to-day the case against J. W aid en for being concerned in the tirring and feathering at the Hvt was beard. Mr Sydney Mnir the victim of the outrage, said he recognised the voice of Walden as on* of those concerned in the outrage. A cabmaa employed by the perpetrators whose cab it ii alleged was lined for conveying the men to the Hiitt has, it appeared, left fwr Sydney about a week after the affair. Evidence was taken to endeavour to show that the handcuffs used on the occanion passed from Mr S. Waters, of Levin and Co., into the possession of the prisoner. Water* swore positively that he never had any handcuffs, in his possession simce 1853, while another witness swore to Waters baring purchased a pair recently at Dawson's ironmongery. A clerk in Levin's also swore that Waters jokiagl; said to him " let us try them on* referring to the handcuffs which. he held in his hands. Smith, a publican, stated that Walden" came into his hotel on the night of the outrage having tar on his clothes and hands. The case was adjourned until this day week for the production of a witness from Hawera.
