" Athlete" in the Evening, Press, in a letter urging the people in Wellington to get up a Caledonian Society, Bpeaks of the Feilding Sports as " one of the finest gatherings one would like to see grace the green."

Mr Beard, of Wanganui, an experienced gold-miner, has been spending a few days in prospecting the Pohangina reefs. He returned to Palmerston yesterday and we (the Manawatu Times) understand that the result of his investigation is that payable gold does exist there but that there is more silver than gold in the reef.

We learn from the Napier Telegraph that twenty men of the unemployed accepted the offer of a gentleman at Wairoa to do bush falling at from four to five shillings a day. The callings of the men are various, one of them being a certificated schoolmaster, but they are all able-bodied and appear capable of work.

A youth who was nding a barebacked horse yesterday from kfr Bishop's blacksmith's forge was thrown heavily on to the hard road. When he was picked up by a friendly bystander it was found that beyond a somewhat severe shaking he was uninjured.

Mr Eobert Mcßeth, of Kiwitea, met with a somewhat severe accident a few days ago. He was walking along the barrel of a fallen tree, and in stepping on to one of the branches his foot slipped, and he fell violently across the log, severely straining and bruising himself. So much so, indeed, that he was confined to bed for several days. He has now almost recovered from his injuries.
