Gold Prospecting

A preliminary meeting with a view of forming an a prospecting association was held on Saturday evening List at the Denbigh Hotel, about 10 persons were present. Mr Reading was voted to the chair, and Mr Staite was appointed secreretary pro tern. After discussion it was resolved to adjourn the meeting till the following Wednesday evening, the secretary in the meantime to invite by circular some of the leading residents to be present.

The adjourned meeting was held at Roe's hotel last evening. Present — Messrs Bray (in the chair), Staite, Secretary, P. Thomson, A. E. Curtis, Carthew, Bishop, J. Turner, Caldwell, (iichard, 0. Roe, junr., Reading, P. Roe, C. Curtis and Patterson.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

The secretary reported having sent out by letter about 25 invitations to the mooting.

The chairman stated the object of the meeting, viz., to consider the advisableness of forming an association for prospecting at Pohangina, i.e. a similar association to one that had been formed at Palmerston for the same purpose.

Mr Staite suggested that it was desirable form an association and appoint two or three parsons to visit the locality and report upon the prospects.

Mr Thomson said this could not be done under about £20.

Mr Carthew made some practical suggestions from his own experience as an old miner. He recommended the sending of two men for about a week to see what the prospects were.

The chairman said there were reefs there in any quantity, but it was the payable gold bearing ones they wanted.

Mr Gichard suggested the appointmen of some one to canvass the town for sub' scriptions towards the preliminary expenses.

After further discussion Mr Carthew proposed, That this meeting constitute itself a prospecting association, each member to pay 5s towards the expenses of a preliminary prospect, and that the town be canvassed for further subscriptions, a report of the canvass to be made to an adjourned meeting the following night.

Mr A. B. Curtis seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Messrs Carthew and tiichard were appointed canvassers.

The meeting then adjourned.
