The outbreak of a fatal epidemic is reported from some remote counties of South- West Virginia and some adjoining parts of Kentucky, Drought having dried up the ordinary wells, the inhabitants drank the water from some mineral wells, which produced a peculiar disease as deadly as cholera. Several entire families perished, the effects of the disease being terribly sudden. The mortality is variously estimated from 400 to 800. Few of those attacked recovered, the proportion of fatal cases being from 60 to 80 per cent. The whole district is reported to be in a condition of great destitution.
