TOWN EDITION

THE BATTLE OF METEMNH.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. TWO NEWSPAPER CORRESDENTS SHOT. 250 ARABS KILLED. (reuter's telegrams.) Received January 29, 1.50 p.m. Cairo, January 28. Later telegram from Wolseley giv< s the following details of the action at Metemnh— When Sir Charles Wilson arrived within four miles of the Nile on the 19th inst. the enemy showed in strong force. Col. Stewart therefore halted his column, though under heavy fire. Here it was that Colonel Stewart was severely wounded. Colonel Sir C. Wils >n then assumed command, and leaving the wounded in Zarehah, marched out the same afternoon. The enomy was led by several emirs on horseback, and charged the British gallantly, but were, repulsed each time, losing five of their emirs and two hundred and fifty killed, besides many wounded. The British loss is not stated. Cameron, the special correspon lent ot the Standard, and Herbert, of the Morning Post, were killed. Subsequent inspection of El Metemneh showed it was fortified and occupied by two thousand Arabs, and Colonel Wilson considered that its position would not be worth the loss which would be incurred in carrying it by assault. Four steamers have reached Gubal, a short distance south of El Metemnh, and landed guns and men. Sir Charles Wilson with two steamers and a detachment of the Royal Sussex, started for Khartoum on the 24th inst. Major General Buller is now leaving Korti for Gubal, where he will take command of the operations. The Royal Irish have also started, and the West Kent will follow shortly. Latest news from General Gordon, dated Khartoum December 29, reports all well.
