[bkuteb's tblrgbams.] London, October 7. The race for the < zaiewitch Slakes to-day resulted as follows : — St. Gatien, 1 ; Rolemiss, 2 ; Archduke, 3. Mr Forster and Mr Morley, M.P.'s, addressed a meeting of 70,000 people at Leeds on the Franchise Bill. The Standard advises the Tories to accept the offer made by the Marquis of Hartinghton with reference to the Franchise Bill. Tenders for the New South Wales loan of five and a half millions at 3£ per cent, and minimum 93 were opened today. The total amount offered was found to be £13.700,000. Tenders at £93 12s 6d will receive 55 per cent, of the allotment and those above that price in full. It is announced that Karl Northbrook proposes the abolition of the present standing army in Egypt, and that in its place there should be maintained a force of nine thousand police. The Egyptian -Government, it is understood, are op. poied to Lord North brook's scheme. Hong Kong, Oct. 7. Port Tamsin, on the coast of Formosa, was to-day occupied by French troops landed by Admiral Lf spes. Caibo, October 7. A case of small-pox has occurred in the Black Watch (Ist Battalion Royal Highlanders) and the whole Battalion has been placed in quarantine. Further intelligence regarding the fate of Colonel Stewart has been brought ; m and shows that Colonel Stewart lost his life trough the treachery of Bedouins. It appears that a party of desert arabs witnessed the loss of the steamer at Wad el Honiar and when Colonel Stewart's party landed offered to escort them to their destination, the Arabs turned upon those whom they were escorting and killed Colonel Stewart and all who were with him.
