Feilding Borough Council
An ordinary meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers on Thursday evening. Pres»eni-rrCK Groodbehere, Worsfold.^ Richardson, Fowles, and Carthew.
In the unavoidable absence of the Mayor Cr Good beherp presided.
The re-elected Cr Thompson, and the newly elected Crs Nicholas and; Gichard made the prescribed declaration, and took their seats at the Council table.
The minutes of the previous ordinary meeting were read and confirmed; " -?
The following correspondence wa? read : -The Mayor, re the proposed orer-^ draft to meet the cost of building Warrick street bridge and making good ise damage done by the Kiwitea stream ; Mr Eeading, agent for Mr S. J. Thompson, re the waterhole on the latter' s property in Grey street ; Mr Luckie, Insurance Com-, missoner, telegram re special rate for Loan ; Mr D. Younger, re the construction of Denbigh street from Kimbolton road to Gladstone street ; Bank of Australasia, re amount remitted to credit of Council at the Bank ; Mr Lacey of Halcombe, asking for information r.e tbe working of the Feilding Cemetery ; Inpector of Nuisances re the bridge over the Makmo m Marl borough street. . ,
Mr Eeading waited upon the Council for advice re the waterhole on Mr S. J. Thompson's property in Grey street occupied by Mr Lowers. Afterwards it wa», resolved. That the matter alluded to in Mr Beading's letter be referred to the Public Works Committee-
Some discussion took place on several matters of drainage and alleged nuisances referred torn tbe Inspector of Nuisance's report. Cr Carthew suggested the desirableness of having a Drainage or Nuisance Committee appointed lor the Inspector to confer with in special cases.
Cr Thompson thought the Inspector should be referred to those clauses in the Act empowering him with his authority. Ultimately the matter was left for the Public Works Committee to deal with.
Eesolved, That the following form the Public Works ommittee : — Crs Fowles, Worsfold, Nicholas, and Etcharditon.
Resolved, That Crs Thompson, Fowles, and Carthew be the Library Committee.
Eesolved, That the Mayor and Crs Goodbehere, Carthew, and Thompson form the FinanceJCommittee.
Resolved, That the Mayor and Crs Loudon, Fowles. Thompson and Gicbard, form the Cemetery Committee. Resolved, That the resolution passed by the Council on the sth inst. that tfe» Public Works Committee report on tho most urgent works required, not having been acted upon, the matter be referred to the Public Works Committee now appoiuted, and that the letter from Mr Younger be referred to them for consideration.
Cr Groodbehere brought forward the . matter of the action taken by Mr Blackmore with reference to the damage dona to his property by the late flood. He contended, speaking from a legal point of •- view, that the damage was an "act of God" for which tho Counoil coald in na* way be held responsible. Still it would ;i be necessary for the Council to take some steps to defend the action.
