BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. CHURCH SCANDAL. THE IRISH INFORMERB. (PHB UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.) Melboubke, September 26. Tbe following regulations have been made under the Education Act for the purpose of affording increased facilities for religious instruction in State schools. Ordinary business shall close earlier one or two days in tbe week. Children whose parents do not object, may remain ta receive religious instruction. Captain Albert of the steamer Yeoman, has been fined Gve guineas each for 37 passengers for not providing them witfn wholesome food on tbe voyage from London. An important meeting was held at Ballarat on Saturday for the purpose of strengthening the hands of the Government in regard to their action in respect to the annexation of the Pacific Islands. The trial of Henry Winter, better known as the Indian Corn Doctor, for fraudulent insolvency, has been concluded. Prisoner was sentenced to 3£ years imprisonment. A good deal of excitement has been caused by the action of the Melbourne Presbytery in bringing a charge of heresy against the Rev Charles Stroag. General sympathy is felt for him. The proceedings lacked order in many instances, and eventually the subject was referred to the General Assembly of the Scots Church. The congregation of which Mr Strong is pastor subsequently held i meeting to express their confidence in him, and hoped his resignation would not be carried into effect. The action of the Presbytery further had the result of causing the Scots Church to resolve to separate from the Presbyterian Church of Victoria. Sydney. September 26. John Rush, son of Michael Rush the well known sculler, won his first race on the Clarence on Saturday. He is 16 years old, and has a fine style.
