The Canterbury Goldfield.

<» [peb united peess association] Chbistchubch, July 23. George Frederick Smith, of South* bridge, has applied to the Government for the reward for a payable goldfield in Canterbury. It was he who submitted the samples of wash-dirt to Dr Skae. The field extends along the ninety-miles beach, from the Rukaia river. An auriferous layer of sand may be traced both north and south of the river for more then sixteen miles between high and low water mark. Mr Smith estimates the yield at £3 a man a week. He bas found a second deposit of equally rich sand extending from the beach along the western shore of Lake Ellesmere for a distance of two or three miles. Some claims have been pegged out, each man taking a length of ninety feet. Four men have taken up a lease of ten acres, under a prospecting license, near ninetymiles beach and Tarimutu.
