ILLICIT DISTILLATION.
Tbe Palmerston distilling cases have turned out to be rather farcical than serious. Messrs Jessop and Peck, the principal agents and offenders, hare elected to be imprisoned for six months in preference to paying fines of £100 each. As the whole plant and material seized by the police are not worth anything, and the amount of the reward for the discovery of an illicit still depends on the value of the goods seized, Constable Gillespie will have to be satisfied with the barren honor of having temporarily interrupted certain individuals from pursuing an occupation, the object of which is to defraud the revenue and the community at large. To travestie the old quotation, " ibe worm in the busk will prey upon the damask cheek" of the revenue again. That this important factor in distillation was not discovered with the still at Stoney Creek is only to be accounted for by surmising that it is in active use in some other part of the district.
