THE WHITE PINE TIMBER TRADE.
♦ On Monday last the following new scale of timber freights came into force on the Patea-Manawatu and Wellington railway lines :—*' White pine timber consigned from sawmills to Wanganui, Fozton, and Wellington for shipment direct to Australian ports will be charged 25 per cent, less than the rates of timber for transhipment ; minimum rate, 8d per 100 superficial feet. Consignments to these ports for transhipment to Australia will be charged the same rate, upon a statutory declaration being fumithed." This concession will have a beneficial effect on the trade in Manawatu, inasmuch as it removes one of its greatest and most vexatious obstacles. The sawm liters will now be able to forward to Wellington by small crafts, via Foxton and Wanganui, cargoes of white pine timber to be transhipped into larger vessels bound for New South Wales or "Victoria. We are much gratified to find that tho Government has adopted our suggestion that a 1 statutory declaration be accepted from [ the shipper, which was the simplest plan of overcoming the difficulties wmch .existed in the regulations of the Audit
