FIRE AT WELLINGTON.
[PER UNITED PBEBS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, This Day. A fire broke out in Mr Jameson's grocory store on Lambton Quay, and obtained a firm hold before the brigade arrived, or water could be procured. Jameson's shop and Madame de Launey's modiste establishment were entirely destroyed, and all the stock was removed from McCredie's ironmongery store, which was once or twice actually light. A strong N.W. wind was blowing, but fortunately the building next to Jameson's was a brick one — Whittaker's booksellers shop. This stopped the progress of what would otherwise certainly have been a very extensive fire. Insurances and origin are not yet ascertained. Later. The origin of the fire this morning is attributed to rats gnawing matches. The two buildings destroyed are owned by J. Joseph, and are insured as follows in the Colonial offico : — Jameson's, £1,000; De Launay's, £500. McCredie's shop, which is only slightly damaged, is owned by Mr Lowes, of Masterton, .and is insured. Both Jameson's and McCredie's stock aro uninsured.
