NEW YEAR'S DAY.

The weather on the first day of the year 1883 was marked by an unclouded sky and brilliant sunshine, the intense heat of which was very little modified by the light breezes which prevailed through part of the day. At an early hour the railway platform presented a busy appearance, and numbers went by. train to the Rangitikei Races and Wanganut. By the 9.50 train a large parly . of ladies and gentlemen went to Kakariki to hold a picnic. Large numbers of pleasureseekers also went by the trains to Falmerston to attend the sports held at Terrace End. Another picnic parly Trent by carriages to the Kiwitea Stream, on the banks of which they regaled and amused themselves. During the forenoon vehicles of every kind were continually leaving with passengers for the Rangitikei Races, and t he exodus was so complete that at 12.30 Feilding was almost entirely deserted, the whole population having apparently gone a-pleasureing, until the 6.30 train arrived from Foxton, when the returning passengers gave the streets a more lively appearance. "Shortly after 8 o'clock the various parties began to return in numbers, and the merry strains of the Makino band, which patrolled the town, had a very pleasing effect "We are glad to note tiiat not a single accident of any kind occurred, and it is commendable that there were no cases of intoxication to be seen in public
