TEMPERANCE PICNIC.

A public picnic, under the auspices of the Feilding Rechabites, Good Templars and Band of Hope, took place on the Oval, on New Year's Day. There were from 150 to 200 persons present. Various sports, including running and walking- matches, and nearly all the wellknown out-door recreations and amusements were engaged in, and everyone, both young and old, appeared to heartily enjoy the proceedings, which wero enlivened by the cheering strains of the Makino drum and fife band, under the able leadership of Mr John Curren The wants of the " inner man" were well catered for in the shape of a most substantial tea, and the many goods things provided wee done ample justice toby the visitors, whose appetites had apparently been whetted by their previous participations in the various games. Mrs Towler had charge of a refreshment stall, at which business was pretty brisk during the whole of the day. As there was no oilier public amusement in Feilding on Monday, we can only eonjecture one reason why the affair was not much more largely patronised, i.e.* the want of publicity, as very few persons outside the members of the above-named societies know it was about to take place. We understand the committee had arranged to advertise, but owing to some slight blunder this was not done, otherwise, we believe, as we heard many remark, that as many more persons would have been preseuL As it was, the whole affair was most thoroughly enjoyable, and we would recommend the united managing committee to make more of it next year s as we see no reason why it should not become one of our loeal holiday institutions.
