The Fielding Star. WEDNESDAY. SEPT. 6, 1882. FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCI L.
To-morrow is the dav of norainflt : ou ; for three candidates to represent the bur<_'psses of Feildino- Jd the Borough Council, and fill the vacancies made b\ the rerirementof Messrs P. Fhomsov, j Johnston, and Baker. Although ; the time, i* near, we are iv comparative darkness as to who inter, d^ com- ! ing- forward, or who their friends will nominate. We trust even that at the last, moment a movement will he made towards creating some agitation, in order that the Bursrisses may have an expression of opinion from candidates on one or two very important | questions ihnt will lie brought beforethem during- their time of office, if clecti (1. The first, and most, important, will be whether the Council will ag-ain submt a loan proposal to the Burgesses, and under what terms and renditions they will be invited to support such loan proposal at the ballot. There can be no doubt that our streets require improving-, and a system of drainage must be sooner or later inaugurated to prevent the pestilence of typhoid and otner fevers appearing among us. As it is, we to-day report a case of typhoid fever at the Awahuri settlement, and if this case mot isolated, in order to prevent infection being-disseminated among- the Natives, and from them to the white population, the consequences may be terrible Ihe only pla» is to look the danger fairly in the face, and it will, with ordinary prudence be overcome but we must be up and doing to check its progress. The first step towards this end is to make proper sanitary arrangements, and see that the officer whose duty it is to carry them out, does so with rigid i in irti.ility, allowing- no false delicacy to interfere with him in any way from making a clear sweep of accumulations of filth in back yards, &c. The candidates must be questioned on these points, and their intentions cleanly stated, in order that the present Councillors may gather what the Burge.>ses require, and the mode to be adopted to carry out their wishes. The public library, street improvements, and lighting, &,c, are matters to be discussed at a future time although of lesser importance in comparison with the sanitary condition of the town. It' is of'theinost urgent importance, that the Mayor, assisted by th Councillors, should make _iaiu;e liat inquiries into the truth J of the reported case of typhoid fever, by referring to Dr Johnston, who has the case in hand, and who noubdess will be only too glad to g-'ve every information, and otherwise render them all assistance 'in his pow6r. ' It will- be seen that the gentlemen who aspire to he Borough Councillors will have, to undertake grave responsibilities, with their attendant cures, and t_is to be hoped that the Burgesses will only- return- sucb-as-are-aW-e te-fulfil the importune dut'es entrusted to ibem.
