THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
On the declaration of the unopposed election of Mr Chamberlain as Mayor, last Friday, he addressed the Burgesses who were present, and in a few appropriate remarks, he thank »d them for the honor conferred upon him. He stated that he had now no d übt tbe affairs of tbe Borough would be carried on hy the Councillors wiih a spirit of unanimity which would materially assist in developing a new era of prosperity. He pointed out that new settlers were arriving day by day. and others were examining into ibe inducements tbe place offered for substantial farmers. As to himself, he fully recognised the responsibilities of his office as Mayor, and would spare no exertions to make the Borough equal to any in the whole colony. He was no' certain that another loan proposal would be made by the council, but if it was it would be supported by a schedule oB works. He considered the opening up of the back coun iry and settlement ou the Olamakapua would do more good than a lo'n, un'ess the loan was judiciously spe t. He again thaaked the B irgesses for the coafid. nee they had placed in him.
