A CANADIAN VISITOR.

IMPRESSIONS ’OF THE DISTRICT. Mr W. G. Fantham,, who is a New by birth, hut who spent many vears in Canada, is at present on a visit to the land of his birth and is spending some time m rukekohe at the home of his married sister, Mrs J. B. Sim. Chatting with a Times representalive* Mr Fantham stated that tne only appropriate word he could use to describe this after his expereinces abroad was Paradise. .It seemed to breathe contentment and home life. In Canada there was no such thing as the home life depicted here. 'He spoke a word of warning regarding the influx of Asiatics into this country. He stated that whole towns had been so honeycombed with them in various parts of Canada that properties had decreased greatly in value. Asked regarding the liquor laws in America, Mr Fantham said that he lived close toi the American border and train loads of whisky went over two or three times, a week’. Very big profits were made in the business for instance, a glass of beer costing in New Zealand 6d is sold for 40 cents or Is Bd. A nobbier of bootleg whisky costs 2s. Land within about 30 miles of large cities in Canada can, be bought at from 40 to 60 dollars per acre. Practically all of it is wheat growing country. The Canadian wheat yield last year was 390 million bushels. Not one-eighth of the land in Canada is yet cultivated. Mr Fantham expects to return to Canada after the close of the Canadian winter. He states that of all the countries he has seen, and he has been in the Argentine, States, Canada and Europe, he is satisfied that New Zealand is the best of the lot and that this little countiy was one to be proud of and glad to live in.
