MANUKAU ROAD WORKS.
COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT,
At last meeting qf Manukau Counj.y Council the engineer (Mr W. J. Lopdell) reported as follows : Hiangere Riding.
The early part of the monjth Foreman Atkins was engaged on metal patching, and has used up most of the available scoria on Ithe roads. The latter pa/rt of the monjih the tractor and grader have been over most of the noads in the Riding and generally speaking have done very good work. The traction 9 engine and scarifier, also the roller, will start on Westney Road. Ijt as our indention to scarify and roll about one mile of .this Vo ad.
Coronation Road: After the plant has completed Westney Rqad it will be ,set up at ; :he Springs where a start will be made with this road; from the School ’Hill to the Black bridge.
Waterworks : The wader extension has been candied along Poinl Road to Mr O’Connor’s property, this work being gairly costly lowing to rock and pine roots. ■ • lnumatao Quarry; The fences arctund this quarry are being repaired and madlp. safe for stock, Pakuranga Riding.
Houf.ck Miain Road: The ioose shingle b,as been graded 'in|»o (the ruts along this roajd and| has itjtft *oad in very good ordejt. Milne’s. Hill, which was commencing Lo break up, has been attended to, and the side backed, up with scoria. / Udy’s Road: This i’oad has been cleaned up with Ithe grader, and is now in fairly good condition. Roberts’ Road: This road has been patched vdjth twenty yards qf shingle. and blinded with road silt. Some of the water channels require /attention. Buckland’s Beach Roads: These roaj.ls have (received a good deal of attention. The ruts have been filled up with scoria and blinded with shell. Bdtany Bridge: The planks on this bridge .are showing signs of decay, five of which require renewing immediately. ( Mr Shine’s Road : The wo'rk authorised in connection wjiih culverts and forming will be put in hand on completion of the Buckland’s beach patching, which will be only a matter'of a "ifpw days,
This Riding is in very fair order for this (time of tire year. Papakura Riding. Manukau Road, Takaniini: The portion of road laiyi down wi£h scol’ia that was too high has been cult down about a foot> and the sides of the road x’e-gradeid This piece of road requires rolling at an early date, otherwise it will go ouit qf shape! l with the traffic. Wallace Road,. Weymouth’: Councillor Davies and myself inspected the culverts along this road and find they are deep enough for all County purposes. , Foreman Thompson reports in connection with the last one on this road that a sel|tldr on the lower, side of »the road has the drain blocked up. If this were opened it would overcome any trouble that now exists. We inspected fchei (ditch ialong the railway lines, and consider they have made a good job. The fall has been taken mp from the creek. General surface work has been canned out during the month, Papatoetoe Riding. Ross Road: This road has been scarified and blinded with scoria. using 1)28 yards. Baird’s Road: Eighty-eight and a half yafds of scoria has been used on this road, also 10 yapds on Firth’s Road, off Baird’s Road, Dreadon’s Road: We’started metalling thjjs road bpt owing to wet weather, had Ito* stop after we had pul on 64 yards. Tamaki Road: This road has been scarified, using 104 yeairds qf metal. It is now being blinded with scqria, but owing to the dijy weather it is not roiling down (too well. Wiri Station Road: Plans and specificatiofis have been prepared, and tenders called for the formation of this work. These Lenders are returnable at our next meeting, and fn the meantime 1 have arranged to run out several contractors. Some of. the settlers have failed to grub and burn up the gorse on the road fronting Lheir sections. Proposed New Road from Wiri Road to Puhi Nui Road: Councillor Waters and myself have met the settlers concerned on 'two occasions, and their final decision is tp form a special railing area and complete the whole work I will prepare an area plan as soon as possible, Turanga Riding; Clifton Wharf: The timber and bol.s have been ordered for this job and will be forwarded immediately. Maungaroa Road : The weltertables along tnis road have been opened up and culverts cleaned out. ' Waikopua Road: This road has been ploughed and done up to allow the cream cart to get through. Maraetai Contracts: This work is proceeding satisfactorily. The contractors are getting on well with Craigs deviation. The posts for fencing have arrived ai ithe Maraetai wharf and the wife has also been sent down. The bridge gang are progressing favourably at the culveit. We have had some difficulty getting a good foundation on the creek side, and to obtain same found it necessary to shift the site a few feet nearer the bank. All the shingle and cemenft. also (reinforcing, have been delivered, Wairoa Riding. North Road: Tb|is road has been patched metal from Thorp’s quarry,, also some good work has been done in ciitfiing off corners and widening the road at narrow places. The graded is also at work on this road. East Road: [The light grader has combed the metal edges which allows he water to get off the road.
