OBITUARY.
Mr JOHN JESSOP. ’Another of that hardy band of pioneers was laid to resit in St. Peter’s Cemetery* Bombay, on Wednesday, the 14th inst. Mr John Jessop, who was 85 years of age, died at the residence of his son-in-law (Mr R. J. Smith, of Takanini). Born at North Fleet}, Kent, England in 1837, the deceased spent several of his early years !i;n the Royal Navy, and saw active service on the African Coast in connection with the suppression of the slave trade. Fifty-seven years ago on the 18th of last March, Mr Jessop arrived in New Zealand on the “Bombay Ship” after which the Bombay settlement was named,, and up to a few years ago resided in this district. The deceased, who lost his only son daring the influenza epidemic, Heaves four daughters, residing in the Auckland district) viz,, Mrs G. Wodtten, Rama Rama; Mrs H- Wootten, Bombay; Mrs j. Howie, Auckland ; Mrs R. J. Smith, Takanini. There are fifteen grand children and 11 great grand children. No less than five of his shipmates of 57 years ago were present at his funerah
