OBITUARY.
MR ALEX. MUIR. The death occured at Mangere on Monday, sth inst, of one of Waiuku’s oldest pioneers, in the person of Mr Alexander Muir, formerly of “Pehiakura” Estate, Kohe Kohe district. Deceased was in his 88th year. The late Mi* Muir came to New Zealand in 1842 from Scotland with his parents, by the famous “Duchess of Argyle” ship. His first work was at the Kawau Island copper mines and eventually he started farming work by superintending the planting of 180 acres of potatoes at Panmure for Messrs Bevan, Campbell and Co. Afterwards Mr Muir took up horse dealing, and carried on this till the end of She Maori war. He used to send shipments of horses to Sydney from Manukau Harbour. After farming at Papatoetoe and the Waikato he took over the Pehiakura estate of .3700 acres and regained this until some eight or nine years ago, when he sold out to the late xVIr J. Nenall. Deceased was a judge of cattle and horses and acted in that capacity at Auckland, Waikato and Franklin Shows for over 30 years. Mr Muir retired. to Mangere after giving up farming. He is survived by a widow and eleven sons and! daughters. Much sympathy, will be felt for the family;, for -thw deceased gentleman was widely known; and respected. MR SAM O’LEARY. Mr Sam O’Leary, who died last week at Pokeno, at the age of 51, was well-known in business circles in Auckland, having been a partner for 18 years with his brother, Mr D. P. O’Leary, of Northcote, in the firm of O’Leary Bros, and Downs, seedsmen. About eight years ago he relinquished business in the city and settled in Pokeno Valley, where he engaged in dairy farming, besides taking an active interest in the affairs of the district, where he was a member of the School Committee, and was greatly esteemed. He was born in Auckland, apd as a young man was associated with many out-door sports, being a keen yachtsman. He. is survived by Mrs O’Leary and two young sons. •_
