BUCKLAND, AWAKE!
News has just leaked out that a gigaptic move is afloat for advancing this fertile district, after years of slumber. In most outlying districts settlers are content to follow a train of thought which has been quite good enough for (the patriarchs of such districts, but time changes, the rising generation being more aljeiyt to necessities, and being educated in our modern, up-to-date schools, are ahead of them many impiovements if only the opportunity would come to their assistance. During the past few weeks a movement has been on foot to turn the dirorict. into a special rating area for the purpose of raising the necssary comodijty (money) to so improve the ;’ old-standing- land marks out °f chaos. Other ideas have sprung- sudldenly to the front, and we understand Buckland is to be honoured with an Improvement Society, and we understand is already christened “The Buckland Welfare League,” (to be incorporated. We wish the Society every success in their forward move. We noticed that Ham. ijton is spending large sums in oroviding parks, foil tennis, golf, and a host of .other recreative works, for which the Borough Council supplies the motive power. Echo answers : Then why not Buckland ? We hope the young blood will be to the fore, and occupy 'the benches, while the passing generation are struck dumb at the general move forward, originating in the minds of advanced thought. Auckland has aljyvays led the way in msftters pertaining to the health and leisure pastimes for the general public, thanks to a public spirited people, who now possess the mosjt favoured Queen City in the Southern Hemisphere. Pukekohe, like most lively centres, is fast making improvements: Old; land marks are making room for* concrete and' mortar. The great attention to such problems of keeping abreast of the times, is sometimes rewarded by such gratuities as beneficient giijts of great value, perpetuating the name c.f the donors, for the careful study of future generations. So Buckland is stepping out into the arena, and we feel sure much good will result in the neaif future, if the people will s/trive to rear, educate, andl advance the Welfare League in the efforts put forth by the initiative burden-bearers of the district. The very bright, neat monument erected to honour the fallen has now been finished, the ground is set off with flower beds, and a hand-rail, supported with concrete posts, speaks well for the dis. trict, and should ever remain an example of gratitude and honour* ito those who were the means whereby it exists there to-day.
