THE HQWICK CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY. PRESIDENTS EEATS VICE-PRESI-DENTS. A large number of friends and members of the Howick Bowling and Croquet Club, as well as visitors from other district clubs, met last Saturday on the occasion of (the official opening of the club for .the coming season. On behalf of the members, Mr T. Speechley, the president heartily welcomed the visitoi*s who had attended to make the function a success. He said' that the club was in a sound financial position and was growing every year. Leading bowlers had represented the club in tournaments and competitions held during the previous year, and he thought that ,in these representative matches the clubs which took part were mutually benefited, not only by fostering the spirit of fellowship, but also bv gaining a wider knowledge of the game- as played by successful bowlers. ... He hoped that during this year the Howick Club would be even more successful than it had been in the past. Mr Speechley then called on Miss liucy Speechlev, who threw up the first lack. Mrs Wvatt, president oi the Croquet Club, hit the first bal, and both greens were declared open for play. - With the assistance ot lacfy friends, Miss Speechley _ served out afternoon tea. papakura .bowling and cro QUET CLUBS.

The opening ceremony in connection with the Papakura Bowling and Croquet Clubs was held laso Saturday. October 29th, under most favourable conditions. The weaker was ideal, and the greens, which have been greatly improved during the winter recess, were pleading to the eve, and eaually pleasant to play on. In a brief speech, the President of the Bowling Club; the Rev. F Hales, referred to the pleasure attached to .the games of bowling and '’roquet, and the opportunities they gave fo * fellowship amongst the residents of the district. After extending a very hearty welcome to all who were present—about 100—the season was deelated open, end Mrs Hales toted the “kitty” along the green sward. A very enjoyable time was spent by both ladies' and .gentlemen in their resepective games, after whjch afte pin tea was served by the lad.es of the Croquet Club.
