PAPAKURA’S WATER MAINS.
HUfoiUA GORGE ROAD ROUTE. FRANKLIN COUNTY’S OBJECTION UPHELD. When the Papakura Town Board’s water reticulation scheme was under consideration it was intended to lay water supply pipes from the dam along the liunua Gorge Road and an application for permission to do so was made to the Franklin County Council by the Papakura Town Board, but the County Council considered that to grant the necessary permission would prove detrimental to the read in future, and would entail heavy expenditure “for maintenance. In view of the Council’s objection, the Town Board appealed to the Minister of Public Works to act as arbitrator in the matter and at Monday’s meeting of the Town Board the following' letter was received from Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works:-- “ Referring to your appeal to myself in accordance with the ninth schedule of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, relative to the laying of the water supply pipes along the Hanua Gorge Road, I have to advise you that I have had this matter investigated by one of my engineers, and from the report furnished to me it is evident that the laying of the pipes along the road would be a source of expense and " inconvenience to the County Council and the settlers and having regard to curves, and the fact that pipes of .considerable length would be used, it would be impossible to keep the pipe line in a fixed relative position to the edge of the road. I find also that it is not impracticable to take the pipes along the side of the gorge, opposite to the road. In view of this expert opinion, I regret that I must uphold the objection of the Lranklin County Council.”
