DISTRICT NEWS.

BOMBAY. VISIT TO KOSLYN STUD FARM. Almost at the bottom of the northern slope of the beautiful Bombay Ir'ii and sheltered thereby from the southerly weather, lies the Roslyn Jersey Stud Farm, owned by Mr Jas. Harris, where some of the best producing Jerseys of the Dominion are to be found, in fact the clam of the champion butter fat cow of the British Empire, Sultan’s Daisy, was bred - at Roslyn. Established about a quarter of a century ago, careful breeding, a genial climate and a rich volcanic soil have been the factors responsible for the development of a type of Jersey which for capacious udders, deep bodies, and splendid constitution would be very hard to beat. That the producing power was there, the returns from the factory have shown for years, as this herd has been developed primarily on utility lines and nothing has been kept which could not pay its way as a producer of £.s.d. per the medium of butter fat. About two years ago semi-official testing was commenced at Roslyn and the splendid results obtained was demonstrated to the Times’ correspondent, who was shown upwards of a dozen certificates of merit, and the silver and bronze medals won by members of the herd last year. The silver medal was won by Roslyn Favourite Flower, who produced 609.141 b butter fat, starting test at the age of 2 years 110 days. Spec’s Lady, who won the bronge medal with 592.591 b of butter fat, was a splendid type of cow, but unfortunately she died from milk fever at her calving. However, several of her progeny are in the herd and will surely be heard of later. The senior herd sire is Sweet Fox of Collingwood, by Darkie Fox, from that grand cow, Rose’s Sweet, who has four S.O. tests to her credit. His two-year-old heifers are proving consistent milkers and high testers, his best daughter so far tested being Lady Sweet with 461.071 b butter fat, Another, owned and tested by Mr A. Best, is Roslyn Miss Rose 452.721 b butter fat, producing 361 bin her twelfth month, thus showing remarkable consistency.

The junior herd sire is Fox’s Double, bred by Mr Lancaster, of Palmerston North, and is by Maiden’s Glory Lad (imp.), out of Flora Fox, who is a daughter of the champion cow Fox Patch 11. This bull is strong in the blood of Majesty Fox (imp.), and as the Roslyn herd is strong in this blood, he should, in his breeding and appearance, do his share in maintaining the very high standard of the herd.

A visit to Roslyn is a treat to a Jersey lover and the two things one cannot fail to be impressed by are capacity and constitution. TUHIIWATA. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. A most successful evening was given by the married folks of the district in Ballard’s barn on Friday, August 19, and was called “The Old Folks’ ‘At Home.’” Very soon after eight o’clock the barn was full to overflowing, there being about 160 guests present. The evening’s programme comprised dancing interspersed with instrumental, vocal and elocutionary items. The talent was of an exceptional order. Those rendering items during the evening were: — Mesdames Cadness, George, King, Misses C. George, A. Stuart, T. Ballard, King, O. Ballard, Messrs. Jones, Gribble, King (2), Lundon, Hall, Hume, MeCallum, Sorrel, many of the performers being encored. The “At Home” came to a close in the early hours of the morning the guests being loth to depart. Much credit is due to the committee for the able manner in which they carried out their duties.
