FOOTBALL.

F. R. U. COMPETITIONS. A PUKEKOHE SENIORS DEFEATED, BY; TUAKAU TEAM. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Senior: Tuakau 6, Pukekohe 3. ■ Onewhero 12, Bombay 3. Junior: Pukekohe 23, Tuakau 0. Onewhero 6, Bombay 5. The Franklin Rugby Union’s competitions were advanced a further stage on Saturday. In the senior competition, Pukekohe, the leading team, suffered defeat at the hands of Tuakau, while Onewhero had little difficulty in romping off the field victors against Bombay. Onewhero juniors beat Bombay “on the post” by the narrow margin of one point. Pukekohe had little difficulty in defeating Tuakau by 23 points to 0.

Pukekohe seniors • are still leading for the senior championship, Onewhero and Pukekohe being level for junior honours. SENIOR. TUAKAU 6 V. PUKEKOHE 3. The Tuakau-Pukekohe senior match eventuated at Tuakau in unfavorable weather. Heavy rain fell during the inatefi, which made matters very unpleasant for the i&ams and spectators. The ground and ball were very greasy consequently brilliant play was Conspicuous by its absence. The game was confined to the forward division, &nd in this department Tuakau simply* outclassed their opponents. The jiome team had the better of the game throughout, unfortunate in not piling! up a larger sc'ore, The Tuakau hookers secured the ball on almost every occasion. Tuakau won by 6 points (tries by Revel! and Cruickshank) to 3 (a goal by Higginson). Mr E. Pollock refereedBy defeating Bombay and Pukekohe, Tuakau has proved that it has one of the best, if not the best, team in Franklin. If Pukekohe is defeated by Onewhero and Patumahoe and Tuakau defeats Onewhero, the senior competitions will be decidedly interesting, as - three teams, Pukekohe, Tuakau and Onewhero would be running level for the championship. ONEWHERO 12 V, BOMBAY 3. Th.s match was pWyed at Onewhero under unfavourable weather conditions, heavy rain falling during the greater part of the game and making accurate handling of the ball impossible, Bombay played a'■ man. short and, although they played a hard game, were eventually oeaten by 12 points (two tries scored by A. Logan and two penalty goals by H. Pellow and Toko Hira), to 3 points (a penalty gojal). For Bombay, Matthews, at wing threequarter, played well and the forwards all worked hard. For Onewhero,,. A. and J. Logan in the forwards and Toko Hira and J. Hira in the backs did good work, y Mr W. Taylor, of Tuakau, who had charge of the whistle, gave impartial decisions which pleased both teams.

JUNIOR GAMES.

PUKEKOHE 23 V. TUAKAU 0.

The Tuakau juniors visited Pukekohe on Saturday to try conclusions with the home juniors. As the teams lined out the visitors gave the impression that they would give the maroons a good game.' They were decidedly heavier, but soon after play settled down the Pukekohe juniors set up a vigorous attack and soon had Tuakau in difficulties. The home backs combined beautifully and some brilliant passing rushes were witnessed. Repeatedly the ball would travel from Roberts to Hart, to 01phert, to Marcroft and to Adams and then to Marcroft, who would centre. This was indeed vex*y pretty to watch. As a result of passing rushes four tries were scored by the backs. On one occasion Jim Adams and Olphert set off with the ball at toe. In turn they dribbled it from their own 25 to their opponents’ 25, where Adams snapped up. He made a dash for the line and passed to Olphert, who got over. It was indeed a splendid piece of work. For the winners tries were scored by Joseph (2), Olphert (2), Pleydell and Fisher, one of which was converted by Hart. Roberts Kicked a penalty goal. Mr Bert Clarke xefereed. '

For the winners the whole of the bocks played splendidly, and it would be unfair to select and particular individual. Of the forwards, Berkins, Fulton and Stewart played well, ably supported by Fisher and Pleydell. Levy (Tuakau), at half back, played a sterling game and he is the best half back of seniors and juniors seen out in Franklin for some time. It wa-, his first game this year and he saved his side repeatedly. Sommerville, until he was injured, played fairly well. ONEWHERO 6 V. BOMBAY 5. Ouewhero defeated Bombay in the concluding stages of the game/ .'*•

Bombay-by the- narrow, margin of one point... With three minutes to go the score 'WiCS' -Bhfetbay *-5>M-* when a visiting player marked and kicked a the game. Mr J. Reynolds refereed.

THIRD GRADE MATCHES. J 1

HIGH SCHOOL 9 V. TUAKAU 0,

The High School-Tuakau third grade match took place on the school grounds on Saturday. It was a good game throughout, and both teams deserve credit for the manner in which they fought it out. The school backs showed a decided improvement and threw: the ball about in a' pleasing, manner. The Tuakau forwards were a little too gdod for the High School vanguard. For High School, tries were scored by Malcolmson and Aldred, while a goal, was also kicked from a mark,; Tuakau were unlucky, on several occasions, in not scoring. Mr F. H. Hewitt refereed. SOUTH 6, V. NORTH 5. South defeated North by 6 points to 5 after a fairly good game. Mr L. Reynolds refereed, CHAMPIONSHIP LADDER.
