GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
PAPAKURA’S PORTION. The Papakura Town Board’s portion of the Great South Road — the work of re-grading, forming and metalling—which has been in progress ' for some time past, is almost completed. The contractor has been exceptional l ;-, fortunate as far as the weather is concerned, and-on Monday last, when the fine spell broke, he had < ; about a chain or s:> to lay...with a. via. This could have been "done . or any circumstances. Even 4 calker remains inclement, the road is~*jsal’s=' able. The scoria has to receive a coat of blinding metal yet, as well as a thorough rolling. When the work is actually completed it will be a credit to the contractor and the Board. MANUREWA’B PORTION. The Manurcwa Town Board Iras been less fortunate as far as the work on its portion of the Great South Road --the re-grading of the School Hills —is concerned. A good start was made, but now that the weather has broken it would be an e'xtremely difficult thing to forecast when the road will be open for traffic, if it is completed before next summer. Fortunately there are subsidiary routes, via Massey and Station Roads, which will have to be used until the Great South Road is in a fit condition for traffic. It is a peculiar thing that several local bodies generally leave important works until the eve of the winter. It would be far better tocommence these works early in the spring so that they would have time to consolidate before the w;i weather.
