DUPLICATION OF RAILWAY LINE.
PAPAKURA’S REQUEST. NOTHING DOING JUST YET. FINANCIAL STRINGENCY THE CAUSE.--With regard to the representations made to the Minister of Railways and the General Manager of the New Zealand Railways by the Papakura Town Board, at a recent meeting, urging the improvement of the train service between Auckland and Papakura, and the duplication of the line, the General Manager (Mr R. W. McVillv) replied at Monday’s meetinc that in the meantime it was not possible,- under existing conditions, to further accelerate the- speed of the service until the heavy grades with single lines both north of Newmarket and. south of Penrose have been eliminated. He pointed out that the duplication of the line to Papakura was part of the authorised scheme of improvement, and the work would be undertaken as soon as circumstances permitted. The alterations now being undertaken at Papakura would fit in with this, but in view of the present financial stringency the full measure of the contemplated work could not be dealt with in the meantime. The letter was received.
