THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
MR G. K, LAWRIE’S fiflEETlftSG. On Wednesday evening a number of people, despite the wet weather, attended at the Strand Theatre to hear the sitting Mayor (Mr C. K. Lawrie) deliver an election speech. Mr W. Johns acted as chairman and stated that Mr Lawrie had just returned from Auckland, where he had been attending the funeral of his sister, and naturally he was feeling very much upset. As chairman he would ask that Mr Lawrie be excused from addressing the meeting.
Mr Lawrie then came forward and stated that he put in an appeal ance to show that he did not fear facing the ratepayers, but felt that it would be a sacrilege to deliver a political address when he had just come from his sister’s graveside. The meeting then dispersed.
