VALEDICTORY.

MR W. HOWE FAREWELLED. A PATUMAHOE FUNCTION. A pleasant and enjoyable function was held in the Patumahoe Public Hall on Monday, April 11, when the gentlemen neighbours and trends of Mr W.. Howe met to bid him God speed and a pleasant trip on his visit to the Old Country. Mr C. Shepherd had all arrangements complete, which were a real credit to him. The early part of the evening was occupied with vocal and instrumental items and recitations. An ample supply of refreshments was provided and full justice was done thereto. At the request of Mr Sheppard, Mr J. Henry, on behalf of his many friends, presented Mr Howe with a beautifully mounted pipe and case also tobacco pouch. In making the presentation, Mr Henry spoke of Mr Howe’s many good qualities and the assistance he had given to the progress of the district in both his private and public capacities. Mr Howe, said Mr Henry, was one of those who had come from the Old Cauntry and made good and was a living example of how persevering industry can raise a man to a position of independence in this country during part of an ordinary lifetime. Several others spoke in appreciation of Mr Howe and all wished him a pleasant trip and a safe return.

Mr Howe suitably replied and stated that he hoped it would not be long before he returned. He thanked one and all for the kindly sentiments voiced.

The singing of the National Anthem terminated the proceedings.
