FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council was held yesterday, when there were present Crs W. Claud Motion (chairman), H. J. R. Lowry, H. O. Mellsop, G. W Heald, B Charles, T. W. Woods, E. C. Cuff., J. Dean, the clerk (Mr Alan P. Day) and the engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur. An apology for absence was received from Cr. R. T. Beid, Taking of a Road. The Department of Public Works fo; warded proclamation taking land for a road and closing a road through Block V Maioro Survey District, known as Denize Road. Also a copy of proclamation taking land for a road through Block IV, Maioro Survey District, Waiuku town district. Plans Approved. The Department of Lands and Survey forwarded duplicate and schedule of plans which had been examined and approved for roads to be taken and closed through and adjoining allotment 151, section 2,. Parish of Opaheke;lots 17 and 27, Karaka Parish;lots 7 and 14, subdivision, part lot 60 Karaka Parish; and allotments 157/161 and lot 1, Karaka Parish, and allotments 248, N.W., 249, 250, S.E, 249 26 and 119, Waipipi Parish. After the necessary consents, if any, are obtained the same are to be returned to the district engineer, Public Works Department, Auckland. —lt was resolved to obtain the necessary consents and the seal and signatures be attached to complete the documents .which are to be returned to the district engineer, Public Works Department.
F/loior Registration. In accordance with the Council’s request the Under Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, advised that the Minister has assigned to the Council the distinguishing letters and numerals “F.N.” 501 and upwards in addition to the letters and numerals F.N. U,to 500 already assigned to the Council for motor registration purposes.—Received. Engineers’ Conference. The New Zealand Society of Engineers expressed regret that the Council’s engineer was unable to be present at and take part in the proceedings of the last annual general meeting held at Christchurch. It hoped that next year the engineer would be enabled to attend the annual conference of engineers to be held at "Wellington. It was pointed out that some interesting and valuable papers on railways, roads, harbours, reservoir clams and other subjects were read and discussed at considerable length.—Received. Names for War Memorial. The Pukekohe Borough Council acknowledged receipt of list of names forwarded,-for inclusion on the Pukelcolie war memorial to perpetuate the memory of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice. —The clerk said that only a few names were handed in and these he sent on.—Received. Kaihau’s Hill. A petition, signed by Mr H. Furniss and 36 other ratepayers in the Waipipi and Awhitu Ridings, requested the Council to regrade Kaihau’s Hill on the Waiuku-Waipipi Road.—The clerk was instructed to reply stating that it was the intention of the Council to regrade the hill, also to attend to other necessary work as soon as material was available. Straying Cattle. Mr W. J. Shorty Waipipi, complained that cattle were running on the roads and damaging- his and Mr J. Herrold’s properties. He requested the Council to see that the road was securely fenced. —Left to the engineer to inspect and attend tot. Paerata-Karaka Road, via Jamieson’s. Mr John Schlaepfer agreed to sell the necessary land at £2O per acre for a road to be taken through section 18 of Helvetia Estate to connect with Karaka. —Left to the clerk and engineer to obtain necessary information in connection with the proposed road and later to get in touch with Cr Charles on the matter with a view of acquainting those in the rating area of the facts. A Dangerous Bridge Messrs Turnbull and McMillan, Manratangi, drew the Council s attention to the dangerous state of the br'dge near Mr Findlay’s property at Miranda and requested it he attended to before a serious accident occurred. The engineer reported that arrangements were in hand for the erection of a new bridge, but sufficient material was not at present available. but as soon as timber was procurable the work would be done.— The clerk was instructed to reply accordinglv.
Noxious Weeds Pest. The Whangarata Rabbit Board drew the Council’s attention to the bad state of the blackberry on the railway line south of Whangarata station. It urged upon the Council to approach the Department with a view to having the blackberry cut.— A copy of the letter is to be forwarded to the inspector of noxious weeds and to the Railway Department. Culvert to be Lowered. Mr. W. J. Jefferies, Buckland, asked ' the Council to lower a culvert on the road between his and Mr Neal’s properties.—Left to Cr Woods and the engineer to deal with. Valuation Rolls. The Valuation Auckland, forwarded revised valuation rolls, requesting that same remain open for public inspection at the County office from April 6 to April 20.—Received. Sandspit Road. Messrs J. Herrold and Simmonds waited on the Council urging that the question of Sandspit road be expedited. Some time ago they requested the Council to strike a special rate in order to raise a loan to do the work. The clerk suggested to the deputation that they define a rating area and report to the Council.. This they agreed to do. The estimated cost of the work was £I2OO, of which the Waiuku Town Board agreed to contribute half Bridle Track Wanted. A request was received from Mr W. K_ Harvey, Ramarama, for the Council to cut a bridle track leading from section 161, Opaheke (formerly Pratt’s), out to the main Ararimu road near the Catholic Church, Ramarama.—Left to Cr. Lowry and engineer to deal with.
