DISTRICT NEWS.
DRURY. ANGLICAN HARVEST FESTIVAL, Our Anglican friends celebrated their Harvest Thanksgiving- at St. John’s Church on Sunday last, when a large gathering of fruit, vegetables, etc., were sent in as harvest offerings, and the Church was very prettily decorated. The Rev. O. R. Hewlett conducted the service, and preached to a large congregation of all demoninations,. and in the course of his remarks made a very strong appeal to the sympathy and liberality of the people for the good cause to which the gifts were to be dispersed for —namely, to help build a new addition to the Papatoetoe Orphan Home, which was becoming greatly overcrowded, owing, mainly to the ravages of the influenza epidemic and the late war. On Monday evening one of Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons’ auctioneers arrived at the Drury Public Hall, where all the goods had been removed, and held a most successful public auction. There was a large number of buyers present, and all had come prepared .to spend largely, and they did so, the prices paid for most of the articles offered being remarkable, STOCK SALE. I was at Runciman cattle sale on Tuesday, and at the prices offering there it makes one wonder that the farmers trouble to rear any calves at all. Both calves and pigs are back to the old days when butter was sixpence per lb, and maize 3s a bushel. The chaff-cutting plant has made a start in the district. They will have more work this season than last. There will not be much profit for the farmer out of oat-growing this year, although the people in town reckon the farmers are all getting rich. PAPAKURA. LAWN TENNIS. PAPAKURA V. BROOKBY. The first shield match between the above clubs was played at Brookby on Saturday, 12th inst., when a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. The visitors were not at their full strength and, though soundly beaten by the local players, had some very close games. From the time of their arrival to the finish the utmost hospitality 7 was lavished upon them, and all are loud in their praise of their treatment and the excellent sportsmanship of their opponents.. The return match will be played on the home courts on Saturday next, when a closer match is expected, as the local asphalt courts are much faster than the grass. Appended are the scores, Brookby names mentioned first: —
